“Truly, a banner year.”
Task
DC Comics had a strong presence at MCM Comic Con in May 2017. A 4-quadrant booth was set up, which dedicated spaces to the upcoming Wonder Woman theatrical release, Injustice 2, the Art of the Brick: DC Super Heroes exhibition and Warner Bros. Consumer Products. Due to the scale and breadth of the stall, a large banner was needed, which highlighted the 2 key releases and drew the 120,000 visitors towards the stall.
As part of DC’s attendance, DC-branded mystery boxes were sold to consumers. The mystery box trend is prevalent at conventions such as MCM, with each box containing a random assortment of items such as t-shirts, figurines, comics and DVDs. The promotional artwork I produced for the limited edition boxes was also used as a panel on the DC booth, as well as across print and social media.
Results
The banner I designed was the largest at the event and was placed in a key, high footfall location.
Mystery boxes were a huge hit among consumers, including vloggers who recorded unboxing on their channels.
I was given the responsibility of managing the allocations of volunteers at the mystery box booth. This included daily debriefing and managing shifts across the weekend.
Working at the booth required an always-on approach, making sure consumers were engaged and knew they were talking to a genuine DC/comic book fan.
